Rome celebrates the New Year with a rich programme of free events and initiatives in the name of music, art, culture and entertainment.
On Monday 1 January, the city will greet 2024 with the more than 80 free initiatives of Capodarte, the big festival spread throughout the city: about 50 spaces and cultural venues, extraordinarily open for the occasion - museums, theatres, cinemas and municipal libraries, but also squares, streets, churches - will come alive until the evening with a packed calendar of concerts, exhibitions, workshops, guided tours, shows, conferences, screenings, and activities for young and old.
In view of Philosophy across Boundaries, the XXV edition of the World Congress of Philosophy scheduled to take place from 1 to 8 August 2024, Rome Capodarte inaugurates the path towards this significant summer event and introduces philosophical themes with scholars, academics and prominent cultural personalities who will be the guests, on 1 January, of meetings and conferences inspired by the city of Rome, its history and the numerous opportunities for in-depth study offered by current cultural life.
From 21 December, in the hope that peace will spread throughout the world and that all the conflicts that are bloodying the Earth will come to an end, Rome will symbolically light up - with the project Roma, Luci d'Artista per la Pace, scheduled to run until 7 January - a reflection on contemporary issues and peaceful coexistence with five light installations created by five great artists in five locations in the city, between the centre and the suburbs: Mimmo Paladino at Piazza della Minerva with Natura primitiva, Marco Tirelli at Piazza Borghese with Senza Titolo, Pietro Ruffo at Piazza Sant'Ignazio with the videomapping The Shape of Peace, Marinella Senatore at Piazza San Pantaleo with We rise by lifting others, and Fulvio Caldarelli at Corviale with Love 2023, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, a work that will be lit up around New Year's Eve.
The works of great authors from the history of art united by their interest in the aquatic element in its crystallised form will be projected from 6 pm to 10:45 p.m. on the façade of the Basilica of Santi Pietro e Paolo at the EUR district thanks to the project Artika - Della neve e del ghiaccio produced by KIF Italia with the artistic direction of Francesco Mazzei and Giuliano Gasparotti, a multidimensional journey in five acts accompanied by the original music of Maestro Furio Valitutti, which reviews the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Pollaiolo, Leonardo da Vinci, Turner, Monet, Van Gogh, Munch, Kandiskij and Chagall.
