Insula dell'Aventino

Insula dell'Aventino ph Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali

Along Lungotevere Aventino, underneath the Church of Santa Maria del Priorato, the Basilica of Saints Bonifacio and Alessio, and the nearby Parco degli Aranci, some large sections of ancient walls are visible.
They were discovered in the years 1951-53, during excavation works for the construction of a reinforcement wall and the stabilization of the slopes of the hill.

These are structures probably pertinent to the remains of insulae - multi-storey houses, tabernae - rooms used as a shop, and horrea - warehouses for the storage of goods, with vaulted rooms, frescoed with geometric paintings and partially paved with black and white mosaic, dating back to various periods, starting from the Republican Age up to the whole Imperial Age.

All these structures were probably connected to the nearby river port. They are to relate to the group of ancient buildings found beneath the Basilica of Santa Sabina as early as the 19th century, together with the findings of 1914 (remains of walls and mosaics) underneath the current seat of the National Institute of Roman Studies.
