Rome's free admission museums

Museo delle Mura

From 1 February 2026, a new pricing system will come into force in museums managed by Roma Capitale. Admission will be free to all sites for residents of the Città Metropolitana di Roma. For non-residents and tourists, the following museums will always remain free: the Museo della Repubblica Romana e della memoria garibaldina, the Museo di Casal de’ Pazzi, the Museo delle Mura and the Casa Museo Alberto Moravia.

Imagine starting your walk in picturesque Trastevere, crossing the River Tiber and reaching the top of the Gianicolo, a place steeped in history and a powerful symbol of the battles of the Repubblica Romana. Here, the Museo della Repubblica Romana e della Memoria Garibaldina, housed inside the evocative Porta San Pancrazio, stands as a guardian of the Risorgimento myth. Thanks to multimedia technologies, visitors can relive the heroic events of those days, listen to the voices of key figures such as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Goffredo Mameli, and immerse themselves in the dramatic atmosphere of a season marked by struggle and hope. It was here, in June 1849, that the last stand against the French troops took place – a pivotal chapter in Rome’s history.

Continuing our journey through time, we head to Porta San Sebastiano, where the Museo delle Mura offers a unique overview of the Mura Aureliane and their transformations over the centuries. Scale models, educational panels, and the chance to walk along the camminamento di ronda allow visitors to experience the thrill of exploring one of Rome’s most impressive defensive systems, among towers and spaces that tell the stories of the people who shaped the city.

For an even deeper step back in time, the Museo di Casal de’ Pazzi is a must-see. In the heart of prehistory, you will discover one of the most fascinating ancient riverbeds, with over 2,000 animal fossils from a Rome very different from the one we know today. Extraordinary finds – including elephant and rhinoceros bones, as well as more than 1,500 flint tools – tell the story of an extremely ancient Rome, inhabited not only by prehistoric animals but also by early humans.

Finally, step into the intimate atmosphere of the Casa Museo Alberto Moravia, a corner of Rome that preserves the spirit of the great writer. Surrounded by books, paintings and design objects, the life and passions of Alberto Moravia come alive in the home he shared with Elsa Morante and later Dacia Maraini. The apartment, minimal and understated, houses a rich library filled with literary and cultural references. Every room tells the story of one of the most important intellectuals of the twentieth century, who wrote some of his most celebrated works within these very walls.
