Ipogeo di Trebio Giusto

The hypogeum was discovered in 1911 and opened in 1976. It dates back to the first decades of the IV century AD and is formed by a passage, a vestibule and a square sepulchral chamber surmounted by a cross vault. On the side walls is a series of niches and on the main one is an arcosolium. The sepulchre is entirely excavated in the strata of pozzolana, in its interior the walls are covered with brick. The importance of this hypogeum is given by its well preserved paintings, that portray the owner of the sepulchre, Trebio Giusto, together with his wife, his son and other people. On the main wall, on top, Trebio Giusto is sitting; beside him is his wife Honoratia Severina and a man, maybe his son, who are stretching a cloth on top of which are some objects. Down below, Trebio Giusto is among some farmers who have brought the products of his land inside the baskets. In the arcosolium is represented the son Trebio Giusto Asellus (“young donkey”), deceased at an early age and surrounded by writing materials, the typical set of students. On the side walls is represented the creation of a building: on the left is the builders' yard, on the right Trebio Giusto speaks with another character, Generosus magister, probably a master builder. On the sides of the entrance is represented the transport of building materials and produce. On the vault of the sepulchral chamber is a shepherd between two sheep.  From the scene represented we understand that Trebio Giusto was a rich landowner and a builder.
