Fontana alla Quercia del Tasso

This fountain designed by the architect. Emanuele Cito Filomarino's fountain is the realisation of one of the winning sketches from the 1928 competition for Italian artists living in Rome to build ten artistic fountains in various parts of the city to replace the cast iron ones.

They were inaugurated on 28 October 1929. The fountain designed for the Janiculum Hill was placed under the 'oak of Tasso'. The verse engraved on the back of the fountain comes from the fifteenth canto of Tasso's famous poem 'Gerusalemme Liberata'. The fountain is surmounted by a modern sarcophagus with a basin with two lion protomes inscribed at the ends of the front, resting on two curvilinear moulded elements; higher up, on the left, is a decorative travertine vase placed on a peperino base.
