Esquilino obelisk

Obelisco Esquilino foto archivio Comune di Roma

The Obelisk stands in piazza dell’Esquilino, behind the apse of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and is devoid of inscriptions that allow it to be dated.

Carved out of the red Aswan granite, it was made at the time of Domitian in imitation of the Egyptian obelisks and was originally placed at the entrance to the Mausoleum of Augustus, in the Campo Marzio area, together with the Quirinal obelisk.

Fallen into disrepair and buried during the early Middle Ages, its remains were found in the sixteenth century when, at the behest of Pope Sixtus V and designed by Domenico Fontana, it was raised again and placed where it currently stands.
