A Night at the Colosseum

This summer, the most popular tour route among locals and tourists returns: the Colosseum Archaeological Park opens its gates for nighttime visits to the Flavian Amphitheater with A Night at the Colosseum, a guided tour lasting approximately 60 minutes, which winds through the monument's first tier, from which you can get a complete view of the cavea, and the underground areas.

The visit is mainly dedicated to the story of the Colosseum from the point of view of the spectators and the protagonists, and therefore as a building intended for the shows that took place throughout the day, including hunts (venationes) and gladiatorial combats (munera).

The tour itinerary begins at the northern archway, once the Emperor's main entrance, with a detailed look at the imperial entrance and the stucco decorations, which offer a complete view of the cavea and an account of the spectacles performed by the emperors. The tour then continues into the underground area, where the permanent exhibition Shows in the Colosseum Arena. The Protagonists is located, curated by Alfonsina Russo, Federica Rinaldi, and Barbara Nazzaro. The exhibition features a newly designed layout that focuses on the protagonists of the spectacles: the gladiators and the animals involved in the venationes.
