The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea - Presented by IP, the most prestigious international athletics event in Italy - the fifth stage of the Wanda Diamond League international circuit - is back at the Stadio Olimpico in its 45th edition.
With wealthy prize money - a total of 9 million dollars - the Wanda Diamond League takes place, once again, in 15 cities on four continents, from the kick-off in Xiamen last April to the finals in Zurich in August. The Rome leg, the first in Europe, features fourteen disciplines: 400m, 1500m, 110m hurdles, high jump, long jump and shot put for men; 200m, 1500m, 5000m, 400m hurdles, pole vault, triple jump and discus throw for women. All disciplines are valid for qualifying for the finals in Zurich in August, scheduled just before the eagerly awaited World Championships in Tokyo in September.
Born in 1980, thanks to the intuition of Primo Nebiolo, then president of the FIDAL, the sports event has recorded numerous records that have helped consolidate its outstanding tradition. From the first edition - in which an enthusiastic crowd admired the performances of extraordinary athletes, such as Pietro Mennea and Sara Simeoni - to the following ones, the major sports event has made the history of world athletics.
Among the protagonists at the Stadio Olimpico are silver, gold and Olympic champions such as Leonardo Fabbri, Joe Kovacs, Tom Walsh, Zane Weir, Beatrice Chebet, Nadia Battocletti, Miltiadis Tentoglou, Mattia Furlani, Quincy Hall, Hamish Kerr, Valarie Allman and Thea LaFond.
On the occasion of the event, junior high school students - born in 2011, 2012, and 2013 - can experience a day of feast and sport with the Palio dei Comuni, the 12×200 maxi- relay, with which the nine best teams will be qualified for the finals, on the schedule as part of the official Golden Gala programme.
