San Gregorio Nazianzeno

Descrizione: SAN GREGORIO NAZIANZENO The church is located inside the Medieval complex that nowadays hosts the Camera dei Deputati, while its construction should date back to the end of C.VIII. The name derives from the fact that the saint’s body was buried here at first; later on, in 1580, by the hand of Pope Gregorio XIII the corpse was transferred to San Pietro made exception for an arm that, closed into a thecla, was kept in the Monastery of Campo Marzio. During C. XII one added the bell-tower that was linked to the church via a portal. Right after this the apse was decorated. The church has undergone numerous restorations, out of which the most important ones took place early in C. XVIII, in 1814, in 1945-49 (when the Medieval decorations came to light) and between 1974 and 1989. The interior embodies a longitudinal plan, with a single nave and roofed by a vaulted ceiling. Above the entry portal one finds the only window.
