Founded in 1542 beneath the majestic dome of the Pantheon, the Pontificia Insigne Accademia di Belle Arti e Lettere dei Virtuosi al Pantheon is one of Rome's oldest and most prestigious artistic institutions. Originally established as the Compagnia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon, it officially began its activities on 1 January 1543, with its first headquarters in the Chapel of Saint Joseph, located on the left-hand side inside the renowned Roman temple. Its foundation, authorised by Pope Paul III, marked a pivotal moment in the history of the arts, moving beyond the rigid structure of medieval guilds and enabling artists to unite within a single association.
Over the centuries, the Academy has welcomed some of the greatest figures in the history of art, becoming a landmark institution for both Italian and European culture. Its members have included such distinguished names as Francesco Mochi, Pietro da Cortona, Diego Velázquez, Francesco Borromini, Luigi Vanvitelli, Antonio Canova and Giuseppe Valadier, artists whose work has left a lasting legacy in the history of art and architecture.
Only a few years after its foundation, Musicians also joined the institution, further strengthening its multidisciplinary character. Alongside the promotion of the arts, the Academy was engaged in religious activities and charitable work, combining its cultural mission with a strong commitment to social welfare. During the second half of the nineteenth century, a bequest from Academician Ludovico Stanzani made it possible to establish an artists' residency programme, dedicated to the education and support of young talent, reaffirming the Academy's enduring commitment to nurturing future generations.
A further expansion of its mission took place in 1995, when Pope John Paul II introduced the Class of Writers and Poets and added the category of Filmmakers to the Class of Painters, formally recognising the artistic expressions of the contemporary world.
Today, the Pontificia Insigne Accademia di Belle Arti e Lettere dei Virtuosi al Pantheon continues to promote research and practice in the humanities, visual arts, music and architecture, bringing together distinguished personalities of both national and international standing who have excelled in their respective fields. Ordinary Virtuosi Academicians, who become Emeritus members upon reaching the age of eighty, are appointed by the Supreme Pontiff on the recommendation of the Presidency Council. They play an active role in the life of the Academy and are joined by Honorary Virtuosi Academicians.
Of particular interest is the Academy's collection, a little-known treasure of exceptional historical and artistic importance. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, documents and works of art trace the evolution of artistic production from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, providing an invaluable record of the cultural history of Rome and Italy. Among its most remarkable pieces is the reliquary case associated with the opening of Raphael's tomb in 1833. Created by Filippo Martinucci and recorded in the collection since 1855, it stands as a rare testament to one of the most celebrated episodes in the history of Italian art.
Today, the Academy's collections are housed across two locations. The principal collection, comprising paintings, sculptures, drawings and furnishings dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, is preserved within the Pantheon, while more recent donations are kept at the Academy's premises on Via della Conciliazione, which also house its library and historical archives.
At selected times throughout the year, the Pontificia Insigne Accademia di Belle Arti e Lettere dei Virtuosi al Pantheon exceptionally opens its collections to the public, offering visitors the opportunity to discover an artistic heritage of outstanding importance that is not normally accessible.
