Since October 1, 2006 the Bulgarian Academy of Arts and Culture “Boris Christoff” in Rome is called Bulgarian Institute of Culture. The building is property of the Bulgarian state, acquired through the donation of the world famous Bulgarian operatic singer Boris Christoff. The donation obligates the Bulgarian state to care for the property and to send talented artists to specialise at the Academy, with priority given to singers. Functioning now as Institute of Culture, it will broaden its activity and will work for popularisation of Bulgarian culture in Italy in all fields of art. In order to fulfil the donor’s will, the Academy will continue its activity within the Bulgarian Institute of Culture and young operatic singers will continue to be taught there. Selection of the persons, sent to the Academy, is made on the grounds of a competition; The Minister of Culture appoints a Board of Examiners for the competition and approves the stay of each and every winner of the competition for such specialisation.
The Bulgarian Institute of Culture in Rome is funded by the State Budget, while its officials are appointed by the Ministry of Culture.
