Founded in 1951 as the National Centre for the Unique Catalogue, it took its present name in 1975. The ICCU promotes and coordinates the activities of cataloguing and documenting the National bibliography heritage, its promotions and unification to international catalogue standards. It manages the scientific and technical coordination of the network of the National Library Service (Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale - SBN), the network of Italian libraries whose aim is to cope with the fragmentation of libraries. The ICCU helps scholars in bibliographic location and editorial activities by publishing - among others - the "Catalogo delle biblioteche d'Italia" (Catalogue of Italian libraries).
