The Foundation was established in 1982 upon the preexisting Gramsci Institute, founded in 1950. Its aim is the critical enrichment of the tradition of the ideal heritage of the Left and the democratic Socialism in Europe. It promotes studies and researches on the works by Antonio Gramsci, on contemporary history, politics and society and their changes. The Foundation houses a library specialized in historical and social sciences and an archive of documental sources on the political, social and cultural history of Italy in the 20th century. In particular it collects the archives of the Communist party (Pci) from 1921 to 1991.
