Via degli Staderari Fountain

Foto sovraintendenzaroma.it

The fountain, formed by a large basin in Egyptian granite from Assuan, rests on a Carrara marble base in the centre of a large peperino basin. Of considerable weight and size, it comes from the Calidarium of the baths built by the emperor Nero in 62 a.D.

When it was found in 1985, during the excavations in the courtyard "della Palma" between Palazzo Madama and Palazzo Carpegna, the basin was fragmented into eight parts. After the restoration it was moved to Largo della Costituente, along via degli Staderari in Sant’Eustachio district. It was then given by the Senate to the city of Rome and inaugurated in 1987, on the day of the 40th anniversary of the Italian Constitution, as a plaque placed in Palazzo Madama, in front of the basin, recalls.
