Chiesa Santissimi nomi di Gesù e Maria in Via Lata

The church occupies part of a piece of land, now between Via del Corso, Via Gesù e Maria, Via del Babuino and Via San Giacomo, on which, in the early 17th century, stood a villa with garden owned by Antonio Orsini, nephew of Cardinal Flavio Orsini. The land and its buildings were purchased by the Discalced Augustinians in 1615, to build their new Roman headquarters and a house for the training of seminarians.
The church was built after the purchase, at two different times; in the meantime, there was a small chapel dedicated to St. Anthony the Abbot, which overlooked Via del Babuino (at the present Anglican Church of All Saints) and was later destroyed. Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone on 3 April 1633 and the first tranche of work, designed by Carlo Buzio, was completed by the end of 1635. On 17 January 1636, the solemn move from the small church of St. Anthony to the new church took place, which was dedicated to the names of Jesus and Mary. The church, which lacked the final part and the façade, was completed some thirty years later, under the direction of Carlo Rainaldi, between 1671 and 1674: on 28 January 1675, the temple was solemnly consecrated, as recalled by a plaque walled in the sacristy for the occasion. Between 1678 and 1690, the interior decoration of the sacred building and its total marble covering was put in place, thanks to the munificence of the bishop of Rieti, Giorgio Bolognetti, who obtained the juspatronage of the church for the family of the Bolognetti princes, later Cenci Bolognetti, following the marriage of Marianna, the last of the Bolognetti family, with Virginio Cenci (1723). In the centre of the presbytery floor in front of the high altar is the tombstone of the Bolognetti and Cenci Bolognetti families, who were buried there until 1805 (Edict of Saint Cloud).

The church is the seat of the cardinal's title of Santissimi Nomi di Gesù e Maria in Via Lata, instituted by Pope Paul VI on 7 June 1967.

Since the late 1980s, the Tridentine Mass has been recited in the church and since 1992 it has been run by the Institute of Christ the King High Priest, making it the longest-running traditionalist Catholic place of worship in the capital.
