Chiesa Santa Maria Portae Paradisi

Its name is tied to the closeness to the entrance to the old gardens of the Mausoleo di Augusto and for the same reason the church was also defined as “in Augusta”. The data related to the construction are uncertain. It was definitely rebuilt in 1523 according to a drawing by Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, and restored in 1626. The facade embodies two orders. In the little porch designed by Sangallo one finds the entry portal surmounted by a bas-relief portraying the “Madonna with child”. All of this is crowned by a triangular tympanum. The interior, usually attributed to GiovanniAntonio De Rossi (1645), presents an octagonal plant and rich stucco decorations, polychrome marbles and frescoes by Pietro Paolo Naldini.
