Chiesa di Sant'Anna

The design of the new church was created by Giuliano Panieri. Established as a vicarage on 5 April 1971 and declared dependent on the parish of St Matthew, the church was erected a parish by decree of Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti on 14 June 1976 and entrusted to the diocesan clergy of Rome; it was inaugurated by Cardinal Vicar Camillo Ruini on 3 April 1993. The project is aimed at improving and expanding the current complex. It was conceived in two phases: the first to complete and finish the exterior spaces while building ex novo a new 800-square-metre liturgical hall and weekday chapel, which is not present today, to allow worship activities to be conducted in a sufficiently large and decorous space; the second with extraordinary maintenance work on the existing structure and consequent reorganisation of the parish spaces, works and rectory. The project drawings concerning the first phase of the intervention, first of all highlight the designers' concern to deal with the context, trying to reconcile the design requirements with both the typological characteristics of the existing structures and the building regulations in force. First and foremost, they sought to open up the parish complex through the large square on Via di Torre Morena, which takes on the role of churchyard and invitation to the centre without interruption, increasingly defining the parish centre not only as a place of worship, but as a pole of confrontation, assistance and social aggregation. The new liturgical hall has a rectangular basilica-type plan, with a façade set back in the form of a pronaos that offers shelter and separates from the liturgical space by means of two concrete partitions, which cut out three windows, two of which are lateral and the third central, marked by the cross. The feriale, like the bell tower, weighs down on the left side, where the volumes of parish works also remain. The point-type load-bearing structure is made of reinforced concrete.
