Chiesa di Santa Monica a Ostia

Work for the construction of the building began on 13 June 1968 (feast of Corpus Christi) in the presence of Pope Paul VI, who blessed the laying of the foundation stone. The church, designed by architect Ernesto Vichi, was inaugurated on the evening of 7 December 1972 by the auxiliary bishop of Rome Remigio Ragonesi, and was dedicated on 22 December 1973 by Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti.

Already a vicar since January 1956, the church is the seat of the parish of the same name, erected on 13 November 1958 by decree of Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara Romanus Pontifex and governed by diocesan clergy.

The parish was visited by Pope John Paul II on 8 May 1983, and by Pope Francis on 3 June 2018.

The building has a Latin cross structure with reinforced concrete load-bearing elements; the cross is emphasised by the intersection of the four main beams that support the ceiling.[6] Externally, the façade is flanked by a portico that connects the place of worship to the other buildings that make up the parish complex.
