Chiesa di Santa Melania juniore

The Parish of Santa Melania Juniore is a church in the diocese of Rome. It is located in the Axa district, on the southern outskirts of the capital.The laying of the foundation stone of the sacred building, designed by architect Aldo Aloysi, took place on 28 October 1984, in the presence of Cardinal Ugo Poletti, while on 2 March two years later, the same cardinal consecrated the new church open to the public, dedicating it to Saint Melania.On 27 November 1988, the church was visited by Pope John Paul II.From an artistic point of view, the church has two noteworthy modern works:
the cross on the bell tower, consisting of two arms that intersect to form two bundles of ears of wheat; symbolically it represents the gift of Christ's life that becomes bread for the nourishment of the faithful;
a terracotta Stations of the Cross, created in 1986 by the sculptor Giancarlo Miccò: it is a single piece 6 metres long, where no fewer than 72 characters are depicted in the 14 stations.
