The church was built in the second half of the 20th century.
It is the seat of the parish of the same name, established on 9 May 1960 by decree of Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara Ut spirituali bono: it is entrusted to the Canons Regular of the Immaculate Conception. The titular saint is the 35th Pope of the Catholic Church. The parish was visited by John Paul II on 4 February 1996.
Pope Francis presided over the dedication of the new church on 7 April 2019.
A peculiarity of the building is that it is several metres below street level: the reason is that the church is actually unfinished, only the crypt remains. The interior has a rectangular plan; the tabernacle, set inside a polychrome stained-glass window, is flanked by two panels depicting the Eucharistic species of bread (ears of wheat) and wine (a bunch of grapes). Next to the altar is the baptismal font.
Due to roof subsidence, the church has had to observe a period of closure since 2016. While the parish was temporarily housed in a tensile structure, the church was completely rebuilt. The work was completed in 2019.
