The church is the seat of the parish of the same name, Parrocchia San Girolamo Emiliani, erected on 21 October 1975 with the decree of Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti Pastoris Aeterni, and has been entrusted, since its foundation, to the pastoral care of the Italian Province of the Clerics Regular of Somasca, known as the Somaschi Fathers.
It was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was consecrated by Cardinal Vicar Camillo Ruini on 14 October 1995. It received the pastoral visit of Pope John Paul II on 1 December 1996.
The plan of the church is octagonal and the stained glass windows of the entrance portal depict the Trinity, the Annunciation, St Peter and St Paul. There are two side chapels: the one with the baptismal font and the one with the wooden group depicting St Jerome Emiliani with the Madonna and some orphans. The tabernacle is located in the Chapel of the Most Holy, adjacent to the church.
