It was built between 1980 and 1981 to a design by architect Aldo Aloysi, and was consecrated on 25 March 1982 by Cardinal Ugo Poletti.
The church is a parish seat, established on 20 April 1978 by Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti by decree. It is the seat of the cardinal title of St Gerard Maiella, instituted by Pope John Paul II on 26 November 1994.
