Chiesa San Bernardino da Siena in Panisperna

Located in the Monti district, the building stands on the ruins of the ancient monastery of St Veneranda, where Pope Clement VIII (1592-1605) transferred the Franciscan tertiary nuns who were in St Euphemia. The church was built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries on top of an elliptical building (whose shape it retains) and solemnly consecrated in 1625.

In the dome are frescoes by Bernardino Gagliardi depicting the Glory of St Bernardine and other Franciscan saints. In a side chapel there is a crucifix in front of which St Bridget used to pray. On the sacristy door is a painting by Giovanni Baglione depicting Saints Francis, Clare and Agatha. The famous Cardinal Guglielmo Sirleto was buried here.

Since 2003, the church has been officiated by the community of Chinese Christians in Rome.
