Rome wraps you, embraces you, and captures you because running here is running through history on a route that is unique in the world and smacks eternity and invincibility.
On Sunday 17 March, the 29th edition of the Rome Marathon kicks off. Officially named Run Rome The Marathon, it is the top international road race par excellence, recognised IAAF Gold Label and from 2019 organised by FIDAL, the Italian Athletics Federation.
As per tradition, the 42.195-kilometer course, which runs in any weather condition, winds through Rome's most iconic places and more than thirty historic sites. Among them, the Imperial Fora - where the start and finish lines are - the Vittoriano and Piazza Venezia, the Circus Maximus, the Lungotevere, Saint Angel Castle, Via della Conciliazione with Saint Peter's Basilica, the Foro Italico and the Mosque, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna with the Spanish Steps, Navona Square and Via del Corso.
The Fun Run is also back. Starting from the Fori Imperiali and arriving at the Circus Maximus, it awaits you for 5 km of celebration, happiness, wellbeing, friendship, lots of music and solidarity to run, together with whomever you wish, and at a free pace, a relatively short but evocative and unforgettable route. You will receive a free souvenir t-shirt in technical running fabric signed by Joma, the prize medal, only for the under 18s, and the Gym Bag with any sponsor products.
The Run4Rome relay race, because running is also a team sport, has at heart the social initiatives of the non-profit organisations supporting the Charity project and to whom you can turn to register for the competition divided into four fractions of 13 km, 11.8 km, 7.2 km, and 10.195 km, for a total of 42.195 km. Fun is guaranteed with lots of music and activities at the changing points of one of the most evocative routes in the world, starting and finishing at the Fori Imperiali, passing by the Vittoriano and Piazza Venezia, the Circus Maximus and the Lungotevere, Saint Angel Castle and Via della Conciliazione with Saint Peter's Basilica.
The Palazzo dei Congressi will host the Expo Village, the home of Acea Run Rome The Marathon: entertainment, sport activity, sponsor stands and brands specialising in the world of running, open not only to runners but also to all lovers of sport, running and wellness. In addition to the bib and race package, at the Village, you will find the Expo Village Food & Beverage, to learn about the dynamics and mission of the Charity Program linked to the marathon, relay and Fun Run.
On Saturday 16, there will also be the presentation of the elite runners, the champions at the start, and of the Pacers, the race assistants who will lead all marathon runners to the finish line.
In the last editions more than 115 countries took part in the event, while in the men's roll of honour there were 14 victories by Kenya, 10 by Ethiopia, 3 by Italy with Stefano Baldini, Ruggero Pertile and Alberico Di Cecco and 1 by Morocco, during the last edition. In the women's category, the flags of Ethiopia waved 11 times, 5 of Kenya, 3 of Russia, 1 of Estonia, Ukraine and Algeria. There was also a lot of Italy, six times, thanks to the victories of Franca Fiacconi, Maura Viceconte, Maria Guida, Maria Cocchetti, Gloria Marconi and Ornella Ferrara.
The record of the race belongs to the Ethiopian Fikre Bekele Tefera, who in 2022 presented himself at the finish line at the Fori Imperiali in 2h 06′ 48″, while the fastest ever was Kebede Megertu Alemu (Ethiopia) who in April 2019 ran in 2h 22′ 52″.
