S. MARIA DEL PIANTO Onenarrates that in 1546 the image of the Madonna frescoed on a wall of Ottavia’sporch wept tears on the occasion of a murder that was committed in front ofher. In order to commemorate the miraculous event the fresco was detached andtransferred into the close church of the Santissimo Salvatore de Caccabariis. AConfraternita named S. Maria del Pianto was thus founded and, in 1612, startedto build a church dedicated to the Vergine according to a project by NiccolòSebregondi (1580-1652), which was then left incomplete. Theinterior, based on a Greek-cross plan, is articulated into pilaster strips. Atthe beginning of the nave one finds the standard representing the “Miracolodell’immagine piangente della Madonna” and the “Vergine in gloria”, by LazzaroBaldi (1624-1703). By the same artist “Madonna e Santi” (transept to the right). On the high altar one treasures the venerated fresco of the Madonna del Pianto(C. XV).
