On the occasion of the recent candidacy of the Via Appia - Regina Viarum as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the FAI Delegation in Rome is organizing a fascinating excursion along the first ten miles of the ancient route, starting from the mutatio ad decimum, i.e. the post station for changing horses, currently included in the area of Santa Maria delle Mole, up to Porta Capena, an ancient gate in the Servian walls near the Baths of Caracalla.
Built between the end of the 4th century BC. and the 3rd century BC. by the censor Appio Claudio Cieco with an enormous engineering and economic effort for military purposes, the Via Appia became the main road connecting with Brundisium (today's Brindisi), which with its port was considered the "gateway to the east", thus favoring the opening of Rome towards the Greek and eastern world. During the excursion there is the opportunity to discover the history of this extraordinary monument, covering the first ten miles going in the direction of Rome, and having the opportunity to observe many historical-archaeological and landscape testimonies still preserved, also thanks to the institution in 1988 of the Appia Antica Regional Park.
During the excursion a detouris is expected to the Villa dei Quintili, in order to visit the temporary exhibition Patrimonium Appiae - emerged deposits currently undergoing at the Casale di Santa Maria Nova, centered on the Roman territory furrowed by the Via Appia, Ardeatina and Latina with an exhibition of materials from the deposits.
