Chiesa di Santa Maria in Trivio

It is one of the oldest churches dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and the name means St Mary at the crossroads-of-three-streets. According to tradition, it was erected by Belisarius, Justinian's general, in the 6th century to make amends for the deposition of Pope Silverius and rebuilt by Jacopo del Duca in 1575 under Gregory XIII.

The unique travertine façade is rich in mannerist hints in the use of decorations; false windows also stand out. The interior has a single nave with four side chapels. The vault of the church is richly decorated with gold stuccoes and important paintings by Antonio Gherardi.
