«Photography is a necessity and not a job. Making an "encounter" between two souls eternal enchants me and makes me feel part of a whole». With these words, the Milanese photographer Giovanni Gastel, born in 1955, reveals his most intimate authenticity and his passion for photography, which he legitimises as an artwork of excellence.
The people I like, curated by Uberto Frigerio, displays over 200 portraits, mainly black and white, of some of the "faces" who Gastel met during his career and who have passed on something to him, taught him, touched his soul, as stated by the master of photography himself.
In the MAXXI Museum, beautiful images of models, actresses, artists, personalities, singers, musicians, politicians, journalists, designers, chefs: from Barack Obama to Marco Pannella, from Germano Celant to Ettore Sotsass, from Monica Bellucci to Miriam Leone, from Vasco Rossi to Tiziano Ferro, from Zucchero to Fiorello, to name a few, the exhibition is a kaleidoscope of photographs displayed without a precise order.
Like humanistic culture, Gastel renders value to man and dignity to the individual and, through the photographs on display, shows a significant part of his work as an artist in over forty years of activity.
