Mercato Trionfale local market

With more than 270 stalls, the Mercato Trionfale is one of the largest markets in Italy and Europe. Its history begins as early as the late 19th century, when the market, then on Viale Giulio Cesare, outdoors and surrounded by countryside, was a meeting point for those leaving or returning to the city, a place to buy goods or water horses.

With Rome’s gradual urban expansion, in the 1930s the market moved to nearby Via Andrea Doria, one of the main axes of the social housing district built from the beginning of the century. Over time, the market has transformed and changed its skin several times, adapting to the needs of the growing city and the need to modernize its facilities. The most recent version of the market dates back to 2009: a covered structure made of glass and concrete, also on Via Andrea Doria, with a vast parking lot in the basement. In 2015, street artist Diavù realized two murals depicting Anna Magnani on the two steps flanking the main entrance. The market structure houses the Trionfale study room, complementary to the historic Giordano Bruno Library.

The market is divided by aisles with boxes of different colors according to the genres handled: green for fruits and vegetables (light green for direct producers), blue for fish, and red for meat. The central corridor is dedicated to the oldest licenses, now in their third generation: each stall tells a unique story, in a kaleidoscope of goods and a mosaic of flavors and traditions that make the market an essential stop for lovers of quality food and Italian culinary excellence.

The Mercato Trionfale is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with extended hours on Tuesdays and Fridays.
