Founded in 2007 by Jin-ho Lim and Kyung-min Ji, choreographers representing the new generation of Korean contemporary dance, the Goblin Party company brings to the Teatro Vascello a lively and witty movement-based performance that is both a reflection on how today’s young artists can carry on the tradition and a dance ritual dedicated to their ancestors.
The company’s name derives from the dokkaebi, legendary creatures from Korean folklore resembling elves or goblins, known for their ability to captivate people with extraordinary skills but also for their playful and mischievous nature. Its distinctive working method is a process of collective creation that aims to connect with the audience through a powerful emotional impact.
On the stage of the Teatro Vascello, the company draws on elements from the past – such as the traditional hanbok costume, the fan, the Korean pipe, the bamboo and horsehair hat, pansori singing, the figure of the yangban aristocrats and ancient tales – to imbue historical figures with new meanings and reinterpret historical events through the imagination.
Historical periods, people and artefacts are deconstructed and recreated through the performers’ diverse artistic expressions – such as dance, song and acting – to transform memory into something alive and give shape to a story to be shared with the audience, as if visiting a scene from the past that might just be real, whilst also offering moments of laughter and light-heartedness.
