From 15 to 21 May, the Teatro Nazionale is hosting HANS WERNER HENZE 100, a special programme as part of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma’s Doppio Sogno season, to celebrate the centenary of the German composer’s birth.
The programme, in a new production of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, features La piccola cubana (15 and 21 May) and El Cimarrón (17 and 20 May), both inspired by the works of Cuban writer and poet Miguel Barnet, with musical direction by Roland Böer and directed by Michael Kerstan.
With costumes by Nana Cecchi, La piccola cubana is a five-scene vaudeville by Hans Magnus Enzensberger that recalls the themes of the novel Canciòn de Rachel.
Composed by Henze in Cuba between 1969 and 1970, El Cimarrón is a recital for four musicians based on the story of the runaway slave Estéban Montejo, adapted from Barnet’s novel of the same name. On stage are baritone Robert Koller, Camilla Hoitenga (flute), Ivan Mancinelli (percussion), and Christina Schorn-Mancinelli (guitar).
