Free public Wi-Fi 6 and 5G-connected video surveillance cameras for urban security are already active in the first 26 of 55 squares in Rome, thanks to the “Roma 5G” project, which has also completed coverage of the entire metro line A.
In total, 230 cameras and 280 Wi-Fi 6 access points have been installed, with over 10 km of fibre, speeds of up to 300 Mbps, simplified login via email, seamless connection and a 14-day timeout.
In another 22 squares, the Wi-Fi infrastructure is already wired and awaiting activation by October: Piazza Don Giovanni Minzoni, Piazza Pietro Thouar, Piazza Testaccio, Piazza di Santa Costanza, Piazzale del Gianicolo, Piazza Risorgimento, Piazza Vescovio, Piazza Annibaliano, Piazza di San Eurosia, Piazza Eugenio Biffi, Piazza Adriana, Monte Ciocci Valle Aurelia, Piazza Stefano Jacini, Piazza Biagio Pace, Piazza Enrico Cosenz, Piazza del Quadraretto, Piazza Giuseppe Raggio, Via Roberto Morra di Lavriano, Piazza di S. Cosimato, Piazza della Bocca della Verità, Piazza Ottavilla, Piazza San Giovanni Bosco.
Seven squares with construction underway and completion to follow: Piazza Cavour, Piazza Barberini, Piazza dell'Ateneo Salesiano, Piazza Conca d'Oro, Piazza Leonardo Sciascia, Piazza Roberto Malatesta, Circo Massimo.
Approximately 1,800 IoT sensors have already been installed in the squares to monitor the environment and air quality. In addition, 4G/5G coverage of metro line A has been completed, with 27 stations and associated tunnels, for a total of over 85 km of fibre optics and approximately 1,500 mini-antennas installed, following the inauguration of the nine Jubilee stations on 1 April. Work is already underway on lines B1 and B, while line C is in the design phase.
Voice and data traffic in Rome's underground system is managed by Smart City Roma's new radio equipment room (BTS Hotel) in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele station, one of the largest and most advanced in Europe.
To transform Rome into a cutting-edge Smart City and offer citizens and tourists a new way to enjoy the city and its services, the ‘Roma 5G’ project plans to enable free Wi-Fi connectivity, thanks to over 850 free Wi-Fi hotspots distributed across 100 squares, 4G/5G coverage of 75 existing underground stations (lines A, B, B1, C) and related tunnels, indoor 4G/5G coverage of 7 public buildings in Rome, as well as the installation of 1,800 IoT sensors for environmental and air quality monitoring, 2,000 ultra-broadband connected cameras for urban security, 4G/5G small cells according to operators' needs and 150 probes for environmental monitoring in underground stations.
How to access Wi-Fi
Once logged into the public network “ROMACAPITALE_WIFI” and entered their email address, citizens and visitors will be able to move between the various enabled squares of Rome without needing to confirm their registration for the following two weeks.
