From 1 to 10 March, after thirty-five years, Richard Strauss' masterpiece returns to the stage of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in a new production, realised in collaboration with Semperoper Dresden.
Created by the German composer in 1912, with a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Ariadne auf Naxos is a story within a story, an opera that shows theatre taking shape. In the prologue, a Viennese aristocrat commissions two performances to be staged together on the same evening: a tragedy about Ariadne, desperate over Theseus' abandonment, and a comedy with Zerbinetta and the comedians. Despite the composer's and artists' opposition, the performance takes place as planned: Ariadne, alone on the island of Naxos, sees death as a way out of her pain, accompanied by the light-hearted interventions of Zerbinetta and her companions, until the arrival of Bacchus and the epilogue that marks a radical change.
Against the backdrop of Jo Schramm's sets, an extraordinary cast, directed by David Hermann, with costumes by Michaela Bart, brings to life one of the most complex and surprising operas of the 20th century, accompanied by Strauss's splendid music, performed by the Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted by Maxime Pascal, a specialist in 20th-century and contemporary repertoire, for the first time at the Costanzi with an opera.
