Mendelssohn: Violin Concert / Hrūša / Gomyo

The final part of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia's Symphonic Season at the Auditorium Parco della Musica offers three concerts that transport us to dreamlike, fairytale atmospheres: the Overture from the opera A Midsummer Night's Dream and the Violin Concert by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Leading the orchestra is Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša, a favorite of Santa Cecilia audiences.

The incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, composed in 1843 at the behest of King Frederick William IV of Prussia, includes a composition from 1826, when Mendelssohn was just seventeen: the Concert Overture, Op. 21, also inspired by Shakespeare's comedy. The latter is considered a composition that we can define as one of the masterpieces of the German musician.

The Violin Concert, Op. 64, Mendelssohn's last composition for soloist and symphony orchestra, is one of the most famous violin concertos of all time. It is a jewel of elegance and passion, entrusted to the talent of violinist Karen Gomyo.

Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, was composed by Tchaikovsky between 1877 and 1878. The symphony is divided into four movements and is characterized by a tragic and passionate content of autobiographical origin, thus representing the confession of a man struggling against an inescapable Fate.
