The Museo Storico della Liberazione (Historical Museum of Liberation) in Via Tasso is housed in the building that, after 8 September 1943, was used as the headquarters of the SS commanded by Herbert Kappler, with an adjoining prison, created in the rooms of the apartments, which were transformed into cells. Many civilians and military personnel active in the Roman Resistance were imprisoned, interrogated and tortured here. Many of those killed at the Fosse Ardeatine were also transferred from this prison.
It is therefore a place of remembrance, as evidenced by the numerous messages scratched by the prisoners themselves on the walls of the cells, which have been preserved as they were then.
One of the rooms is dedicated to the persecution of Roman Jews from the Fascist period to the Second World War.
As evidence of that page of history, photographic panels, archival documents and original files relating to the arrests are on display.
In the Museum, it is also possible to view multimedia material and consult the Historical Archive and Library.
