First release of Julia, Rome's virtual assistant, kicks off

from 7 March 2025 to 31 December 2025

For the first time an Artificial Intelligence at the service of the city, making it a pioneer of digital innovation: JULIA, the first virtual assistant designed to improve the experience of citizens, tourists and pilgrims, is born.

Julia is a generative Artificial Intelligence designed to simplify daily life and provide immediate access to reliable data on Jubilee, mobility, events, culture and essential services, and an innovation that transforms interaction and exploration of the city, making it more intuitive, accessible and engaging for all.

JULIA stands out from other chatbots thanks to its certified knowledge base, fed by official data from Roma Capitale and other validated sources that enable it to provide up-to-date, in many cases real-time, precise and contextualised answers: from hotel searches to consulting public transport timetables, from cultural events to Civil Protection alerts, from information on the Jubilee calendar to searching for tourist Infopoints.

Designed with the contribution of Microsoft, who engineered the GPT-4o model, and developed in its first release by NTT Data, JULIA is constantly evolving, thanks to progressive updates that will enrich its functionalities, to offer an increasingly high-performance, customised and complete service.

JULIA can:

  • Interact in a natural and personalised way with users of multiple nationalities (it knows over 80 languages).
  • Provide information on events, museums, shows and places of interest.
  • Give support on mobility and transport with waiting times and updated data on underground, buses, trains and flights.
  • Inform about fixed fares and suggest how to book taxis.
  • Based on localised research, give information on alerts and emergencies in real time to ensure the safety of citizens by suggesting the correct behaviour to adopt.
  • Suggest restaurants, hotels and useful services based on the user's needs.
  • Guaranteeing maximum security and protection of personal data, in compliance with the GDPR.

Answers are implemented with addresses, links and contacts for the most complete and detailed information possible.

Available on WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and web chat, JULIA is an always-on virtual assistant, ready to answer users' questions in real time. It will continue to improve by offering a more efficient and personalised service.

This is the first release, others will follow in the coming months with more data, information and technological developments. Like any A.I.-based chatbot, JULIA may make mistakes, but it is an integral part of the continuous learning process: it will learn through user feedback and grow over time by refining both its ability to understand queries and its ability to choose answers. In addition, it will constantly increase the verified data base.

JULIA will not only provide information and advice: its intelligence is designed to adapt to users' needs, guiding them through the urban experience with contextualised suggestions and answers based on current city conditions.

JULIA represents a fundamental step towards an increasingly smart and interconnected city. Its development is part of a broader digitisation strategy that aims to improve the accessibility, use and efficiency of urban services.

Rome, with its extraordinary historical and artistic heritage, thus becomes a model of innovation that combines technology and culture, offering visitors and residents a cutting-edge tool to better experience the city. With its arrival, Rome is projecting itself into the future, welcoming Artificial Intelligence as a valuable ally for improving the quality of life and city management.

Shopkeepers who wish to be found on JULIA can register their business, simply by accessing the 060608.comune.roma.it portal with their Spid.
