Palazzo Incontro

Palazzo Incontro is a historic building in Rome, located in the Campo Marzio district, built in the second half of the 18th century, exactly in 1765 by the architect Giovanni Paolo Burij. The building is owned by the Province of Rome, which restored it in 2004-07.

The area where the Palace was built belonged to the properties of the San Maria della Pietà dei Poveri Pazzi Hospital; the land had already been affected in the archaeological age, with some discoveries of insulae and commercial buildings, dated between the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 3rd century. The area was then densely inhabited throughout the Middle Ages.

For the construction of the building, several older buildings were demolished and reported in the plan drawn up by the architect Burij. Among these, the Chapel of the Virgin - located in the center of the alley - was demolished and rebuilt nearby. From other documents it is known that the Palace had already been completed in 1768, and then rented the following year.

With Malerini's renovation, the plant was used for rent, creating several optimal homes for several middle-class families; this architectural typology became common throughout the eighteenth century, when the main religious orders decided to dispose of their real estate possessions by entrusting them for a fee to the new bourgeoisie families.

Having maintained its function until the capture of Rome, the ecclesiastical possessions were absorbed by the newly formed Kingdom of Italy, in particular by entrusting Palazzo Incontro to the new Province of Rome.
