‘Stairs, steps, corridors that opened up between the vegetable gardens, then more stairs and steps, a vertical landscape submerged in greenery, all the way down to the Viale di Trinità dei Monti’. This is how Federico Fellini, perhaps its most famous resident, described via Margutta, the iconic street in the heart of Rome.
Made famous in the 1950s by the film Roman Holiday and La Dolce Vita, a historic refuge for artists and their ateliers, via Margutta has hosted, as inhabitants or simply as visitors, the greatest protagonists of art and culture including Picasso and Guttuso, de Chirico, Wagner, Liszt and Puccini, Zola, d'Annunzio, Sartre, Anna Magnani and Giulietta Masina.
Once again this year, to celebrate its ancient vocation, via Margutta awaits you for the now classic appointment with the Cento Pittori (One Hundred Painters ) and turns into an open-air art gallery, as lively and colourful as it was back in 1953, the year the historic event was instituted.
"L'informazione ieri oggi e domani, tradizione e innovazione, a cento anni dalla nascita della Radio ’ (Information yesterday today and tomorrow, tradition and innovation, one hundred years since the birth of the Radio ) is the title of this edition, the 122nd, which celebrates 100 years since the birth of the radio service: 6 October 1924 was the day on which the first radio programmes were broadcast, marking the beginning of a new era of communication and culture in Italy.
The 100 artists in the exhibition, each with their own personal style, come from all over the world, in particular from Holland, Bulgaria, Poland, Ukraine and South America, Peru. Their works on the given theme will be on the historical exhibition structures consisting of an easel surmounted by a parasol.
The selection is curated by the Director of the Technical-Artistic Commission Franco Dore, while the coordination for the organisation of the exhibition is entrusted to the Vice President of the Association Antonio Servillo.
Like last year, some young students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and the Interart Cultural Association will participate in the event, with a view to a fruitful cultural and generational exchange.
Cento Pittori Via Margutta has the patronage of Roma Capitale, the Presidency of the Lazio Region and the ICAS Intergruppo parlamentare Cultura Arte e Sport.
