The origins of the excavation of the catacombs date back to 1918 with the development of the area. The hypogeum complex, that covers an underground area of approximately 110x120 metres, is arranged on different levels, corresponding to two distinct catacombs with completely different and independent genesis and development, which were only later reunited by means of tunnels.
Each of them is composed of different regions: the eastern and upper one of three, the western and lower one of two.
