The striking art installation by JR at Palazzo Farnese

from 26 July 2021 to 29 August 2021

A black and white work with a three-dimensional effect that, through an illusionistic game, offers passersby a virtual peep inside a Renaissance jewel in the heart of Rome. This is the latest initiative by the celebrated French artist JR, included by Time magazine among the 100 most influential people on the planet and author in March of a similar transformation of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.

Since 20 July, a striking site-specific installation covers the façade of the 16th-century Palazzo Farnese home to the embassy of France – built by some of most famous architects of the time such Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Michelangelo, Vignola and Giacomo Della Porta. The giant trompe-l’oeil of over 600 square meters was built using the photographic collage technique: looking at it from a precise point of view, it is possible to admire the vestibule with three naves, the barrel vaults, the Doric columns and the statue of Hercules Farnese hidden inside building, currently undergoing a significant restoration work to restore the structure to its original beauty.
