New works and re-openings between Termini station and Piazza della Repubblica

from 14 January 2025 to 30 April 2025

Great Jubilee construction sites and urban regeneration works funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan have involved numerous quadrants of the city. In the last year Rome has been affected by a series of works that have changed the face of its streets and squares, which can now be enjoyed in a renewed and unprecedented guise, and enhanced its exceptional heritage.

The largest intervention in terms of surface area concerned the area around Piazza dei Cinquecento and Termini railway station, a gateway for those arriving in Rome and a central node for the city mobility. Divided into two lots and spread over 8 hectares, the equivalent of 8 football fields, the construction site is now 85% complete, with the changes made to the road system on Via Marsala and Via Giolitti and the Piazza della Repubblica area. In December, the square and the pedestrian promenade in front of the former Planetarium were inaugurated, while the Dogali garden, between Palazzo Massimo and the Baths of Diocletian, will soon see full completion.

The area in front of Termini Station, which reopened to the public on 14 January, was also redeveloped with high quality materials. In total, 30 thousand square meters of marble and stone, 20 thousand square meters of sanpietrini, 10 thousand square meters of architectural concrete, 10 thousand square meters of new garden and flower-bed areas, and 6 thousand square meters of asphalt paving have been laid, with the aim of rationalizing urban spaces, improving safety conditions, and encouraging pedestrianization. In particular, the bus terminal (12 thousand square meters) and the new taxi dock (8 thousand square meters) have been redesigned. The last lot of works will be carried out in several stages: completion is expected by 2025, thus earlier than planned.
