Monument to Alcide De Gasperi restored

from 16 August 2024 to 31 December 2024

On the night of 19 August 1954, Alcide De Gasperi passed away at his home in Trentino. He had been the main protagonist of the first decade of the Italian Republic, Foreign Minister between 1944 and 1945 and then uninterruptedly Prime Minister from December 1945 until August 1953. Seventy years after his death, the Capitoline Superintendency with the support of Zétema Progetto Cultura has cleaned the bronze slabs of the monument dedicated to this great statesman. The green mantle surrounding it was also replaced and the metal stele on which there is a QR code that links to in-depth content was cleaned.

The idea of commemorating Alcide De Gasperi with a monument in Via delle Fornaci (near the house where the politician had lived in the postwar period) dates back to 2004. The Municipality of Rome entrusted the task to the artist Maria Dompè, who devised a singular environmental art intervention, reproducing a valley in Trentino, De Gasperi's homeland, with a sloping meadow enclosed by bronze slabs. A number of quotations were engraved in lost wax, in capital letters and without interruption, on the covering, summarizing well De Gasperi's ivision on the European community and calling for brotherhood, tolerance and the spirit of sacrifice in community service.
