Launched by Roma Capitale and ACEA, the municipal multi-utility, the joint project set to enhance the symbolic places and monuments of ancient and modern Rome moves forward. After Piazza del Popolo, the Pantheon and the dome of the Great Synagogue, to name just a few of the latest interventions, it now involves one of the most important monuments of Italian Risorgimento history. A new lighting system was designed for the square of Porta Pia and the Monument to the Bersagliere, thus marking the 150th anniversary of the of the breach of Porta Pia, which took place on 20 September 1870, when the gate was the site of the battle that led to the annexation of Rome and the unification of Italy.

The artistic and functional lighting project involved the installation of 26 projectors and the use of innovative and sustainable technologies that reduce energy consumption by 50%, while improving the night visibility of the area and its safety. Specifically, new lampposts with LED lights have been installed in the piazzale and the bronze statue of the Bersagliere is now lit by four circular projectors that add value to the monument. Inside the complex, which hosts the Museo Storico dei Bersaglieri, 6 next-generation LED elements illuminate the bronze busts as well as the monument dedicated to Enrico Toti, while at the top of the building four more elements light up the effigy of the Madonna.

During the ceremony, the Italian flag was projected on the monument wall.
