Record numbers for Rome’s airports, which have recovered 93% of flights compared to the pre-pandemic period. With a growth of 38% compared to 2022, Fiumicino airport welcomed around 40.5 million passengers from over 70 countries around the world in the year just ended. More modest but still positive was the growth recorded by Ciampino airport, used mainly by low-cost airlines and express-couriers. The Giovan Battista Pastine airport has once again proved capable of intercepting low-cost traffic, thus favoring tourist flows in Rome and Lazio: in 2023, 3.9 million passengers transited through the Roman airport, +12% on 2022.
Contributing to this positive scenario is the extensive network of domestic and international destinations, as well as excellent standards in service quality. The city of Rome is connected to all continents thanks to a schedule involving around 100 airlines flying 230 routes. In 2023, 45 new air connections were activated: in addition to Asia (and China in particular), growth mainly involved the North American market, i.e. Canada, Mexico and the United States, with 34 flights a day in peak months, including 11 to New York. The Leonardo da Vinci airport is now the third European airport after London and Paris for the number of flights to New York and among the fastest growing airports for flights to North America.
The steady increase in passenger traffic suggest record levels for 2024. At the beginning of the year, flights to North America will, for example, reach 73 per week (+70% compared to February 2019) and new destinations are already planned for the 2024 summer season, including Chicago, Toronto, Riyadh, Accra, Dakar, Jeddah and Kuwait City.
