The Casina di Raffaello, Rome's art and creativity space, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the Japanese Cultural Institute in Rome by hosting the exhibition Trottole e aquiloni dal Giappone (Spinning Tops and Kites from Japan) open to both adults and children.
The exhibition, inaugurated in the renovated Sala Natura of Casina di Raffaello, offers a glimpse into the ancient folk culture of the Land of the Rising Sun, presenting a precious collection of kites and spinning tops, symbols of the connection between earth and sky. These small masterpieces of wood and paper craftsmanship have been flying in Japan for over 1,200 years. Thousands of them are still made by hand today, using traditional designs and colors characteristic of the various production regions.
The pieces in the exhibition, sourced from across the country, also provide interesting ethnographic information about Japan, with local variations and references to various seasonal events. The ancient techniques passed down through the centuries from generation to generation, natural materials like wood and paper, and vibrant colors combine with lightness and playfulness in a wonderful art that is always current in Japan.
