From 19 to 29 May 2026, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma presents a new production of Gioachino Rossini's masterpiece, which returns to the stage of the Costanzi Theatre after twenty-two years.
The two-act opera, with a libretto by Gaetano Rossi inspired by Voltaire's tragedy of the same name, was created by the famous composer in 1813 and premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in February of the same year, achieving great success.
The heroic opera is set against the backdrop of the city of Syracuse, an independent but shaken city, torn by the feud between the influential Orbazzano and Argirio families, and the threat of the Saracens. It tells the story of the nobleman Tancredi, exiled, and Amenaide, Argirio's daughter, who are mutually in love. The young woman's intercepted letter, addressed to her beloved to ask him to return and defend Syracuse, leads Tancredi to believe that Amenaide has betrayed her country in favour of the Saracen enemy Solamir, causing him to unjustly reject his beloved, with whom he will reunite in the finale, against any tests of faith.
On stage, with sets by Carmine Maringola, is an extraordinary cast, including contralto countertenor Carlo Vistoli, exceptionally in the role of Tancredi, usually assigned to a contralto, Hasmik Torosyan (Amenaide), Enea Scala (Argirio) and Luca Tittoto (Orbazzano), with direction by Emma Dante, who also designed the costumes with Chicca Ruocco, choreography by Manuela Lo Sicco and lighting by Luigi Biondi.
Rossini's splendid music is performed by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted respectively by Michele Mariotti, performing Tancredi for the first time, and Ciro Visco.
