Something in the Water

An elusive element capable of resisting any attempt to be molded, but also a source of inspiration for works that are heterogeneous in terms of generation and origin, with its incessant flowing water is the protagonist of the exhibition in the Gianferrari Room and Gallery 2 of MAXXI. The exhibition is a new production that represents a new chapter in the Water School project of the American artist Oscar Tuazon, here also as curator together with Elena Motisi.

By distorting and mixing sculpture and architecture, natural and industrial materials (wood, cement, glass, steel), Tuazon creates structures and installations that welcome and question the human body, making it a protagonist of the environment. Along the exhibition itinerary, with an installation that evokes the sinuous flow of the loops of the Tiber, his works (Great Lakes Water School, a 2023 work in collaboration with Peter Sandbichler, Floating Flower and Still Flowing Water, from 2024, and the new site-specific production Ocean Pavilion) are placed side by side with those of 14 other artists. All together, they invite visitors to reflect on the poetics of water, but also on environmental challenges, on the dynamics and policies related to access and control of land, water and infrastructure, and on the relationship between man and nature.

The exhibition features works by Lita Albuquerque, Saif Azzuz, Matthew Barney, Christo, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Torkwase Dyson, Leslie Hewitt, Nancy Holt, Pavlo Makov, Virginia Overton, Marjetica Potrč, Ugo Rondinone, Peter Sandbichler, Anna Sew Hoy, Oscar Tuazon.
