One of the most famous and beloved comedies of all time, A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616), is on stage at the Quirino Theater, directed by Daniele Salvo.
Written in verse between 1594 and 1596, this fantastic comedy, or rather an unusual fairy-tale drama, can certainly be counted among Shakespeare's most original works. The gripping and rather intricate plot intertwines the events of the wedding of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, with those of two couples of lovers -Leander and Hermine, Helena and Demetrius - who get lost and chase each other through a forest labyrinth populated by fairies and elves. In that magical place, on that night, the world of mortals comes into contact with that of spirits and the two dimensions end up mirroring each other, blurring together, so much so that it is impossible to distinguish what is dream and what is reality.
Oberon, the king of the fairies, and Puck, his elf, entertain the four young people, using spells and magic to ignite sudden passions between them. The intricate fairytale game comes to an end when Oberon lifts all the spells; at this point, Duke Theseus can track down the lovers and happily reunite them.
The most significant innovation in this Shakespearean production is the creation of a young, completely bilingual company: the young actors perform in both Italian and English.
