The exhibition SAISEISAN - Japan and the art of reproduction, held at the Japan Cultural Institute, has as its theme reproduction (in Japanese, “saiseisan”) in Japanese art, that is, the inclination that the archipelago in particular has towards the revival of art through remaking.
The saiseisan still represents a phenomenon that cuts across fashions and generations, as demonstrated by the brocades and 3D figures on display from seemingly distant worlds: high culture, which preserves the precious ancestral legacy of traditional art, and pop and contemporary culture, which draws on an unlimited mass imagination: from the refined Tatsumura fabrics inspired by ancient techniques and themes that passed along the Silk Road to the figyua of Kaiyodo, the cult miniatures which excite the otaku; from Buddhist statuary to folklore, from Hokusai and Hiroshige to Heidi and Akira.
A very original exhibition, therefore, which embraces Japanese art in all its different aspects and is dedicated to a varied public, certainly not to be missed.
