From 28 April to 6 May, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma is presenting Charles Gounod's romantic masterpiece for the first time on the stage of the Costanzi Theatre, in a new production as part of a three-year collaboration project with the Teatro di Roma.
Premiered at the Théâtre-Lyrique Impérial in Paris in April 1867, the five-act opera was created by the French composer in 1865, with a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, inspired by William Shakespeare's famous tragedy.
Set in the city of Verona, the Montagues and Capulets are divided by an ancient hatred. The young Romeo and Juliet, unaware that they belong to the two rival families, meet at a party and discover a sudden and overwhelming feeling for each other, which, amidst secrets, dangers, and stolen moments, will lead them to a tragic ending.
Directed by Luca De Fusco, Director of the Teatro di Roma, is an exceptional cast, including Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze and tenor Vittorio Grigolo, who alternate in the leading roles with Vannina Santoni and Duke Kim, accompanied by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted respectively by Daniel Oren and Ciro Visco, with sets and costumes by Marta Crisolini Malatesta, lighting by Gigi Saccomandi, videos by Alessandro Papa and choreography by Alessandra Panzavolta.
